The Jake Epp Public Library in Steinbach, Manitoba hosted an open-mic night on September 25, 2025.

Alan Wiebe performed “Rail’n’Jail and the Catch-Out Kid” from his book Saxophone Blues, the “Television Show” for books. In this comedy of fiction, Jimothy Dyck - a somewhat misguided dreamer determined to make it big despite his lack of talent - hops a freight train with a weathered hobo named “Rail’n’Jail” Jenkins.

“The creative writing program at the Jake Epp Public Library connected me with other writers in my community. I instantly felt at home in the writer’s room," said Wiebe. "The experience of connecting readers and writers together at the library helped me take my writing to the next level.”

Several Manitoba writers, including Curtis Nordstrom and Mitchell Toews, performed at the event alongside Wiebe.
